ELLISVILLE, MS – After back-to-back postponements the No. 15 Lady Indians were able to open the 2013 tennis season, but found themselves on the short side of things dropping their season-opening match 5-4 to the No. 24 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats on Friday.
"It was just one of those days that the breaks seemed to be going against the girls," said ICC tennis coach Paul Johnson. "Give credit where credit is due Jones did a great job coming out focused and ready to play, but with it being our first match of the year I was pleased with how we started the season against one of the state's best teams."
Amy Evans (Ravenshoe, Queensland) and Katherine Downing (Pontotoc) teamed up to pick up the Lady Indians (0-1) lone win in doubles play with a 9-7 victory over Alicia Domoney and Stephanie Smith in No. 1 play.
Brenda Hegwood and Elizabeth Wright defeated Anna-Blair Hunt (Senatobia) and Theresa Jackson (Clarksdale) 8-6 in No. 2 doubles play while No. 3 doubles Carly Stuart and Madison Walker picked up an 8-3 win over Bianca Stephens (Hernando) and Frankie Turner (Pontotoc).
"It's a lot different playing against people you are use to verses playing against real live competition, but I think after today the girls will be able to shake off their loses and get things pointed in the right direction," Johnson commented.
In singles actions, Evans defeated Domoney 6-1; 6-2 in No. 1 play while Stephens downed Aja White 7-5; 6-2 in the No. 4 match and No. 3 Hunt picked up a 6-4; 6-4 win over Hegwood.
"I thought the girls did a great job of getting focused for their singles matches," said Johnson. "I think some of them realized they may have not been as in good of shape for match play as they thought they were. Overall it wasn't the start the season we were hoping for, but it was still a better start to the season than people might realize."
No. 2 Downing fell 6-1; 6-1 to Smith. No. 5 Jackson dropped a 6-1; 6-0 decision to Wright and No. 6 Amber Frederick (Shannon) was defeated 6-2; 6-0 by Brooke Martin.
The Lady Indians will take on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Saturday.
