Lady Indians pick up historic win over Northwest

Lady Indians pick up historic win over Northwest

FULTON, Miss. -  The Lady Indians (4-0-0, 2-0-0) rallied to pick up a 3-2 win over the Lady Rangers (3-3-0, 1-1-0). The win gives the Lady Indians their best-ever start to the season in the history of the program.

How it Happened

Northwest took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half before Brittany Mathis (Pontotoc) scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Tiffany Ogden (Olive Branch) to cut the lead to 2-1 at the break.

Francisca Galleguillos-Pollarolo (Santiago Nunoa, Chile) bounced the equalizer off the keeper and into the back of the net for an unassisted goal to tie the match, 2-2, in the 47th minute.

Northwest saw a header bounce off the post in the final seconds of the match to open the door for overtime.

Grace Joyce (Oxford) scored the golden goal off a rebound from a deflection by the Northwest keeper 22 seconds into overtime.

Sonic Star of the Game

Grace Joyce (Oxford)

Joyce scored her second goal of the season off a rebound from a deflection by the Northwest keeper after Addison Meadows (Oxford) put a strong shot on goal.

Renasant Reaction

"I'm so thrilled right now, but all the credit goes to the team" Joyce said after the match. "They were passing it around and Addison Meadows got the original shot and did all the work. It's just a great feeling to come out with the win."

"It's division play and nothing's easy," said Coach David Strother. "Credit to Northwest, they had really good goals early on [in the match]. We were playing our system and doing everything right. They just caught us on some good chances that they happened to finish. This is just what this rivalry between us and Northwest has turned into over the years. It's gone there way some of the time and it's gone our way some of the time, but for it to go our way right now and us to be 4-0 and undefeated in North Division play and now the best record in program history to start the season... I couldn't be any prouder of the team. I'm extremely happy for them and the program here at ICC."

Up Next: The Lady Indians will travel to Ridgeland to face nationally-ranked Holmes on Tuesday. The First American National Bank opening kick is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
