FULTON, MS – The Itawamba Community College women's and men's soccer programs earned the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Team of the Year when the league released their annual academic awards.

"We are really proud for both our teams," said Coach Mike Sullivan. "This is a huge accomplishment and honor for both our squads and for the college. We came close last year and all the players made this part of the goals they wanted to achieve this season and we can't be more proud to see all their hard work in the classroom get this type of national recognition."

The Lady Indians missed out on the 2013 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honor by .02 and captured this year's honor with a 3.52 GPA while the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division Champion Indians finished with a nation's best 3.34 GPA.

"We stress our expectations for the classroom in our preseason meetings and throughout the year," said Sullivan. "Both squads blew our expectations out of the water this season and hopefully can building on the success in the classroom and on the field to have even more success next season."

Amanda Sergovia (Amory) earned the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement Award and was named MACJC Distinguished Academic All-State after finishing her sophomore year in Fulton with a 3.80 GPA while Columbus' Katie Proctor (3.72), New Albany's Randi Stevens (3.72) earned the NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement Award and were named MACJC Academic All-State along with Starkville's Demi Menotti (3.57) and New Hope's Mary Margaret Swain (3.50).

Olive Branch's Daniel Cox (3.42), Corinth's Cullen Grantham (3.44) along with the Caledonia duo of Drew Hankins (3.41) and Nick May (3.31) were named to the MACJC Academic All-State list after helping lead the Indians to the program's first-ever outright MACJC North Division Championship.
