Lady Indians hang on to win at Northwest

The Lady Indians survived a late rally and a bad call in the final seconds of the game to hang on for a 61-59 win at Northwest on Thursday.

Down 34-25 at the break, the Lady Indians outscored the Lady Rangers 22-12 in the third quarter to take a 47-46 lead into the fourth quarter.

Northwest made it a two-point game with less than 30 seconds left in the game and stole the ball at mid-court for a potential game-tying lay-up. Xhiir Burgess (Oxford) raced down the floor and deflected the lay-up off the leg of the Northwest player.

The official on the baseline awarded the ball to the Lady Indians, but the official behind the play overruled the baseline official and gave possession to the Lady Rangers. Northwest drew up during the timeout that resulted in an open three from the corner, but the shot sailed long and time ran out allowing the Lady Indians to earn the two-point win.

Whitney Watkins (Decatur, Ala.) and Kealy Wilson (Olive Branch) each had 12 points while Burgess added 10 in the win.

Claire Fleming led Northwest with 12 points.
