Indians fall to No. 2 Northwest Florida State

NICEVILLE, FL – The Indians (1-3) wrapped up their weekend swing in Florida with a pair of losses to No. 2 Northwest Florida State College (6-0) on Saturday.

Game 1: No. 2 Raiders 8 Indians 0 (5 innings)

The Indians a runner in scoring position in the first and loaded the bases in the second in the second, but couldn't find the timely hit needed to push across the runs.

The Raiders took advantage of a pair of Indian errors in a four-run home half of the second and added a two-run home run in the fourth to go up 6-0.

Sammie Day-Jones reached on a two-out single and advanced to third when Jessi Smith connected on her second double of the game, but the Raiders got a ground ball to get out of the inning with no damage done.

Northwest Florida started the fifth with a solo home run and scored on an error to pick up an 8-0 win in five innings.

Smith was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles while Day-Jones and Chloe McClain both added a single.

Julia Shaw (1-1) was the pitcher of record after giving up six runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

Game 2: No. 2 Raiders 10 Indians 2 (5 innings)

The Indians bounced back to score a pair of runs to start the second game of the evening.

Hallie Turner walked to start the game and advanced to second on a single by Smith. Riley Tyree smashed a double to center to score Turner and push Smith to third, who scored on a ground out by Emma Rose Thompson.

Northwest Florida answered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Tyree double with two outs in the third inning but a ground out to end the threat. The Raiders took advantage of back-to-back walks with bases loaded to take a 7-2 lead after three innings.

Northwest Florida tripled and scored on a ground out before a two-run home put the Raiders up 10-2 in the fourth.

The Indians loaded the bases in the fifth after back-to-back singles by Day-Jones and Smith but an untimely double play by the Raiders closed the door on the rally and ended the game in five innings.

Smith was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tyree went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a RBI.

Turner (0-2) was the pitcher of record after giving up five runs, one earned, on five hits and five walks with one strikeout.

The Indians are scheduled to travel to Wallace State on Tuesday, February 13.
