Indians fall to Pensacola State

PENSACOLA, FL – The Indians struggled to find timely hits in a 9-0 loss to Pensacola State College on Friday.

Pensacola State (4-2) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning after scoring on a pair of passed ball and a single.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, Jessi Smith doubled to the fence in left for the first hit on the night. Smith advanced to third when Julia Shaw followed with a single, but the Pirates escaped the inning with no damage done. Pensacola tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a bases-loaded walk and an error.

Tamiya Martin and Camdyn Cooper reached on back-to-back singles and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch with two outs in the fifth, but a fly ball to right ended another threat for the Indians.

Lauren Brown replaced Hallie Turner in the circle to start the bottom half of the fifth. The Pirates made it a 7-0 game after scoring when the Indians picked up an out in a rundown at first base.

Sammie Day-Jones started the sixth inning with a single and advanced to third, but the Pirates defense stood strong and got out of the inning with the runner left on third.

Pensacola State put the game away with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to pick up a 9-0 win over the Indians.

Day-Jones had two hits and Smith added a double to the Indians' six hits on the night. ICC moved to 1-1 on the season.

Turner (0-1) was the pitcher of record after giving up four earned runs on four hits and seven walks while matching a career-best nine strikeouts – previously set in an 18-3 win over Mississippi Delta on April 18, 2023.

The Indians will be back in action Saturday at No. 2 Northwest Florida State College (4-0).
