Indians open season with win over Roane State

PENSACOLA, FL – The Indians opened the season with a 7-4 win over Roane State at Pensacola State College on Friday.

Hallie Turner started the season off with a double to center and scored after a single by Sammie Day-Jones and a groundout by Riley Tyree to give the Indians a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Day-Jones made it a 2-0 game in favor of the Indians on a single by Julia Shaw.

Day-Jones reached on an error in the fifth and advanced to second on a single by Jessi Smith. Chloe McClain reached on an error that allowed Day-Jones to score from second. The Indians took a 4-0 advantage when Avery Wolfe hit into a fielder's choice that scored Smith.

Roane State cashed in on an Indian error to make it a 4-1 contest after six complete.

Julia Shaw reached on error and advanced on a Wolfe singled to center. Emma Rose Thompson reached and advanced to third on the second error of the inning that allowed Shaw and Wolfe to score. Tamiya Martin ripped a single to score Thompson and give the Indians a 7-1 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Roane State hit a three-run home run in the home half of the seventh, but the Indians were able to record the final two outs of the game to pick up the season-opening victory.

Martin had two hits and a RBI to lead the Indians at the plate. Turner and Camdyn Cooper each had a double in the Indians' eight-hit performance.

Shaw (1-0) picked up the win after giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks in the complete game effort.
