No. 15 Indians fall to No. 12 Pearl River

Poplarville, Miss. – In conference battle between nationally ranked opponents, No. 15 Itawamba Community College softball dropped both games to No. 12 Pearl River Community College Saturday, falling 6-2 in game one and 10-6 in game two.

Game 1: Wildcats 6, Indians 2

The Indians (19-8, 6-4 MACCC) took an early lead with Sarah Kate Thompson (Myrtle) doubling in a run and Sammie Day-Jones (Ragland, Ala.) driving in run in the top of the third.

Pearl River answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Indians remained in front, 2-1.

The Indians struggled to find hits and the Wildcats plated three runs in the in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the game, 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats added two insurance runs on their way to the 6-2 win.
 
Game 2: Wildcats 10, Indians 6

Jessi Smith (Senatobia) and Thompson led the Indians offense going 2-for-4. Both of Smith's hits went for extra bases with a double and a home run, and the Indians started the game strong scoring three runs in the top of the first.

However, the Wildcats answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame and added two runs in the second to take a 7-3 lead.

Smith's home run in the top of the third cut the lead to three, 7-4, but the Wildcat bats stayed hot in the bottom half scoring three to take a 10-4 advantage.

The Indians scored two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Hanna Grace Gillean (Mantachie) and Bryanna Clemons (Eudora) stealing home.

In the final two frames, the Indians were held scoreless and the Wildcats picked up the win and the sweep.

The Indians return to Fulton Wednesday for a rivalry doubleheader against No. 13 Northeast Mississippi Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be available on LetsGoICCTV.com/red.
