No. 17 Indians bounce back to earn a split with Meridian

MERIDIAN, MS – The No. 17 Indians (14-5, 1-1 MACCC) bounced back from a disappointing performance in a Game 1 loss to earn a split with Meridian (6-15, 1-1 MACCC) after picking up a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

Game 2: No. 17 Indians 7, Meridian 1

Sammie Day-Jones (Ragland, Ala.), Jessi Smith (Senatobia), Bailey Ware (Batesville), and Riley Tyree (Trussville, Ala.) had two hits each to help the Indians to earn the split with a 7-1 win in the second game of the day.

The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Haylee Alberson pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly and a two-run double by Rayne Rippee (Sardis).

Smith and Tyree each added a RBI single in the third inning to give the Indians a 5-0 advantage through three innings. The Indians went up 6-0 when Tyree was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the fourth.

Avery Wolfe (Hernando) tripled and scored on a ground out by Julia Shaw (Hernando) to go up 7-0 before the Eagles got a run back in the bottom half of the inning before Emily Robinson (Springville, Ala.) closed the door on the rally.

Robinson (8-2) gave up one earned run on five hits and five walks while striking out nine in the complete game effort.

Game 1: Meridian 4, No. 17 Indians 3

Missed opportunities haunted the Indians in a 4-3 loss in the opening game of the day.

The Indians loaded the bases with the game tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth, but couldn't cash in on the opportunity. The Eagles pushed across a run in the home half of the inning to go up 4-3 and got a three-up, three-down seventh to pick up the victory.
