Tyree's 7-RBI day helps Indians sweep Northwest-Shoals

FULTON, Miss. – Riley Tyree made the best of the Indians' home opener on Tuesday.

The freshman from Trussville, Ala. went 6-for-6 and drove in seven runs to help the Indians (6-0) sweep Northwest Shoals (0-4).

Game 1: Indians 14, Northwest Shoals 1 (5 innings)

The Indians took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Sammie Day-Jones (Ragland, Ala.) tripled and scored when Jessi Smith (Senatobia) reached on a fielder's choice. Rayne Rippee (Sardis) walked to put a pair of runners on with one out and Tyree brought them home on a towering home run to left field.

Tamiya Martin (Nettleton) started a seven-run second inning when she scored on an error by the Patriots on a steal by Bailey Ware (Batesville). Ware scored on a bases-loaded walk to Smith before Rippee bounced a double off the top of the fence to score Sarah Kate Thompson (Myrtle) and Day-Jones.

Tyree put the Indians up 10-0 on a two-run single to plate Smith and Rippee. Haylee Alberson (Hernando) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-single by Ware before the Patriots collected the third out of the inning.

Shoals sparked a rally in the top of the third with three-straight singles to start the inning. Carley Hunter started the inning with a single and scored when Kailey Armstrong reached on a fielder's choice.

The Indians answered with three runs in the fourth. Hallie Turner (Southaven) started the inning with a single and Martin drew a walk before both scored on a single by Tayler Bishop (Ecru). Emma Rose Thompson (Hatley) followed with a monster solo home run to right to help give the Indians the run-rule victory.

Emily Robinson (Springville, Ala.) improved to 3-0 on the season after giving up one earned run on four hits and no walks while striking out four in three innings. Alberson entered in the fourth to give up two hits and collect a pair of strikeouts in two innings of scoreless work.

The Indians totaled 12 hits and stole eight bases in the win. Tyree and Turner both going 3-for-3 at the plate with Ware stealing three bases.

Game 2: Indians 8, Northwest Shoals

The Indians' bats woke up in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead in the nightcap.

Smith tied the game when she doubled and scored on a Tyree single. Martin entered to run for Tyree, stole second and advance to third on a single by Emma Rose Thompson. Both scored on a single by Hanna Grace Gillean (Mantachie), who would score on a triple by Bishop.

Day-Jones doubled and scored on a single by Avery Wolfe (Hernando). Tyree drove in Wolfe for her seventh RBI of the day on a single. Chloe McClain (Fulton) would drive in Tyree on a ground ball to second to put the Indians up 7-1 after five complete.

Maggie McVey (Blue Springs) reached on a single and scored the game's final run on a double by Wolfe in the sixth.

Julia Shaw (Hernando) gave up one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out five to improve to 3.0 on the season after five innings of work. Turner entered to pitch in the sixth and gave up one hit with four walks and two strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

The Indians extended their double-digit hit streak to five games with 12 hits in the win. Tyree went 3-for-3 while Emma Rose Thompson and Wolfe each had a pair of hits.

ICC is scheduled to host Marion Military Institute (4-0) on Saturday with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
