Shaw impressive in collegiate debut against South Arkansas

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Freshman Julia Shaw (Hernando) made the most of her first-ever collegiate start inside the circle and helped the Indians cruise to a 10-0 win over South Arkansas Community College on Friday.

Shaw tossed five scoreless innings and only gave up two hits and two walks while striking out eight in the win.

The Indians (2-0) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game away.

Hanna Grace Gillean (Mantachie) singled and stole second to start the inning before scoring on a single by Sarah Kate Thompson (Myrtle). Shaw walked and scored on a single by Sammie Day-Jones (Ragland, Ala.). Riley Tyree (Trussville, Ala.) drove in Thompson on a single and force the Stars (0-2) to go to the bullpen down 5-0 still with only one out in the inning.

Rayne Rippee (Sardis) reached on an error and Day-Jones scored when she jumped over the catcher's tag attempt. Haylee Alberson (Hernando) kept things going with a single to plate Tyree. Rippee and Alberson would score on an error to put the Indians up 9-0 when the dust finally settled on the inning.

The Indians took a 1-0 advantage in the first when Day-Jones singled and scored on a single by Rippee. Jessi Smith (Senatobia) reached on a single to start the second inning. Tamiya Martin (Nettleton) enter to run and scored on an error to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.

Tyree doubled to plate Day-Jones, who reached on a walk in the fifth, to give the Indians the 10-0 win in five innings.

Day-Jones went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Tyree was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Alberson finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

The Indians had 10 hits in the win.

ICC will face National Park Community College and Bishop State Community College tomorrow to wrap up the Mardi Gras Invitational.
