No. 5 Indians sweep Northwest with pair of comebacks

Senatobia, Miss. – The Indians scored a combined 15 runs in the seventh inning of both games to comeback and to pick up the sweep of Northwest Thursday.

In game one, the Indians scored six runs in the top of the seventh on their way to a 14-11 win, and score nine runs in the final inning of game two to pick up the 9-6 victory.

Game 1: Indians 14, Rangers 11

The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Rangers scored seven unanswered runs over the first three innings to take a 7-3 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Indians plated three runs on the second home run of the game by McKenzie Patterson (Corinth), cutting the lead to 7-6.

The Indians would score a run in both the fifth and sixth, but the Rangers plated three runs and held a 11-8 advantage heading into the final frame.

After a pair of bases loaded walks by Caroline Clark (Tuscumbia, Ala.) and Patterson, Haylee Alberson (Hernando) hit a grand slam to center to give the Indians their first lead since the first.

Madison Jenkins (Cleveland) shut down the Rangers in the bottom of the seventh to secure the comeback win for the Indians.

Patterson led the Indians offense with a 2-for-3, two home run and five RBI performance, and Alberson went 2-for-4 with four RBI on her grand slam. Kara Hays (Mooreville) picked up her first home run this season as well as the Indians picked up 12 hits in the win.

Game 2: Indians 9, Rangers 6

After the exciting game one win, the Indians struggled to find their offense in game two and were shut out for the first six innings.

While the Indians' bats were quite, the Rangers broke the stalemate in the fifth scoring five runs and added a run in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead heading into the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Alberson put the Indians on the board with a two run scoring single and Tayler Bishop (Ecru) scored on a ground out to cut the Rangers lead to 6-3.

Connor Stevens (Amory) hit a run scoring single and scored when Rayne Rippee (Sardis) doubled. Hannah Henry (Brandon) tied the game with a triple to left field.

Hays gave the Indians their first lead of the game on a two run scoring triple with two outs and Clark drove in Hays to cap off the nine run inning.

The Indians kept the Rangers off the board in the bottom of the inning to secure the win and the sweep.

Sunday, the Indians will host Hinds for a conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
