No. 2 Indians remain unbeaten with sweep of Gordon State

FULTON, Miss. – The No. 2 Indians (10-0) remain unbeaten on the season with a pair of wins over the Gordon State (GA) College Highlanders (5-6) on Saturday.

Game 1: No. 2 Indians 7, Gordon State 2

Madison Jenkins (Cleveland) and Raynee Rippee (Sardis) started the bottom of the second with back-to-back home runs to spark a four-run inning for the Indians.

Jenkins smashed the first pitch of the inning to centerfield to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. Rippee followed with her first-ever collegiate homer hit into a gusty-wind in left-center to push the lead out to 3-0 before the Highlanders could collect the first out of the inning. Caroline Clark (Tuscumbia, Ala.) pushed across Kaitie Boatner (Guntown) and Hannah Henry (Brandon) on a single that was deflected off the pitcher.

McKenzie Patterson (Corinth) drove in Boatner and Henry with a double in the bottom of the fifth.

The Indians first run of the game came on a sacrifice fly by Kara Hays (Mooreville) that scored Henry in the bottom of the first.

Henry, Boatner, and Clark all had three hits in the win.

Jenkins improved to 4-0 on the season after giving up two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five in five innings of work.

Game 2: No. 2 Indians 3, Gordon State 1

Allyson Harrison (Mantee) stepped up in the clutch when the Highlanders loaded the bases with no out in the top of the third inning.

Harrison reeled in a hard-hit ground ball and threw the runner out at home for the first out of the inning. The freshman third baseman made the play of the game when she snagged another sharply hit ground ball but instead of going home, she quickly tagged the runner trying to score and beat the runner trying to advance to third to turn an unassisted double play to get out of the inning with no damage done.

The Indians took a 2-0 lead when Haylee Alberson (Hernando) hit a solo home run and Patterson drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second. Clark tacked on an insurance run in the third with a solo homer to start the inning.

Ka'Mya Hampton (Pinson, Ala.) improved to 5-0 on the season after giving up two hits while striking out three in five scoreless innings of work. Emily Robinson (Springville, Ala.) made her second appearance on the day to pick up the save after giving up one earned run on one hit with one strikeout.
