No. 10 Indians sweep Jackson State to open season

Jackson, Tenn. – Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) went five-for-eight with three doubles and three RBI to help the No. 10 Indians sweep Jackson State (Tenn.) Community College to open the season on Saturday.

Game 1: No. 10 Indians 8, Jackson State 0 (5 innings)

Olivia Burns (Grenada) picked up where she left off last season. She tossed a one-hitter and struck out six batters in five innings of work in the Indians' 8-0 five-inning win.

Leading 3-0, the Indians put the game on ice with a five-run fourth inning. Hope Harbin (Columbus) and Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) both singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Harbin scored on a single by Kacey Carpenter (Grenada), who was replaced on the bases by Lilli Moore (Fulton). Conley and Moore both scored on a double by Cox. Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) entered to run for Cox and advanced on an error before scoring on a stolen base.

Mattie Meine (Olive Branch), Conley, and Cox each had a pair of hits in the run-rule victory. Conley and Cox each drove in two runs while Makenzie Toombs (Ackerman) stole two bases.

Game 2: No. 10 Indians 10, Jackson State 1

The Indians picked up a pair of runs in the second and three more in the third to complete the sweep of the Green Jays with a 10-1 win in the final game of the day.

Maggie Smithey (New Albany) walked, advanced on a passed ball, and eventually scored on an error to give the Indians a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Rachel Sternisha (Olive Branch) walked and came around to score on Conley's second single of the game.

Cox smashed a single to open the third inning and was replaced on a bases by Hannah Sparks (Mantachie). Sparks advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Vasquez and a throwing error before stealing home to put the Indians up 3-1 with one out in the inning. Vasquez scored on a triple to right by Sternisha, who would score on an error before the Green Jays could get out of the inning.

Cox finished the game with three hits while Conley, Sternisha, and Jessica Davis (Cumberland) each added a pair of hits. Sternisha had a pair of RBI.

Kaylee Nelson (Moulton, Ala.) picked up her first collegiate win after giving up one earned run on two hits in three innings of work. Hannah Swallers (Olive Branch) threw two innings of hitless softball and struck out one. Mary Kate Butler (Pontotoc) gave up two hits and struck out two in two innings of scoreless work.

ICC will be back in action on Saturday, February 9 when they host the same Green Jays of Jackson State starting at 2:00 p.m.
