FULTON, Miss. – For a second time this season, freshman Olivia Burns (Grenada) has been named Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Pitcher of the Week after totaling 27 strikeouts last week against Southwest Tennessee Community College and Northeast Mississippi Community College.
Burns struck out a career-high 14 batters while giving up one run on two hits in the No. 3 Indians' 5-1 win over Southwest Tennessee on Tuesday.
She followed up her career-best performance with 13 strikeouts to help ICC advance to the MACJC Softball Tournament with a 5-0 victory over rival Northeast on Saturday. She tossed a one hit shutout to improve to 18-2 on the year to move into sole possession of second place for most wins in a single season, surpassing 2015 graduate Hannah Johnson (Branson, Mo.).
"It was one of the most dominating back-to-back pitching performances we have had since I've been at ICC," said Coach Andy Kirk. "The defense played great to help her have such an outstanding week."
Burns and the No. 3 Indians will take on Pearl River Community College (25-18) at 4:00 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the MACJC Softball Tournament. No. 4 Jones County Junior College (43-3) and No. 11 East Central Community College (33-10) will close out the first day of tournament play at 6:00 p.m.
The tournament will continue Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude with the first of two possible championship games starting at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
