Burns fans 14 in 5-1 win over Southwest Tennessee

FULTON, Miss. – Olivia Burns (Grenada) struck out a career-high 14 batters in the No. 3 Indians' 5-1 Game 1 win over Southwest Tennessee Community College on Tuesday.

Burns had a no-hitter going through 5.1 innings of work before giving up a pair of singles in the top of the sixth inning. She finished the game with one run on two hits to improve to 17-2 on the year.

The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Burns reached on a two-single and scored on a double by Shelby Newsom (Cleveland). Madison Carnes (Ecru) followed with a double of her to push across Newsom before the Saluqis could get out of the inning.

ICC hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

Cori Childs (New Site) singled and advanced to second on a throwing error before scoring on a single by McKenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.). Piper was replaced on the bases by Makenzie Toombs (Ackerman), who scored on a single by Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.).

Southwest answered with a run in the top of the sixth but came up empty in the seventh as the Indians held on for the 5-1 victory.

Carnes went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the way at the plate for the Indians.
