No. 4 Indians rebound to earn split at Gulf Coast

GULFPORT, Miss. – The Indians got a two-hit shutout from Olivia Burns (Grenada) and a pair of hits from Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) to help the No. 4 Indians rebound for a 3-0 win in Game 2 to earn a split with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at Harrison Central High School.

The Indians (31-7, 22-2 MACJC) got things going early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Cori Childs (New Site) drew a walk to start the game and stole her 35th base of the season before scoring on a single by Conley. Conley stole second and came around to score on a two-out double by Mckenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.) before the Bulldogs (16-12, 11-9 MACJC) could get out of the inning.

Brittany Triplett reached on a one-out single but was thrown out dead-to-rights by Conley to end the bottom half of the inning.

Both team traded scoreless innings before the Indians added an insurance run in the top of the fifth when Childs singled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Newsom (Cleveland).

The Bulldogs picked up their second hit of the game when Kristen Sexton singled in the bottom of the sixth and advance on a passed ball to put a runner in scoring position for the first time in the game before back-to-back fly outs to Piper and Haley Reid (Batesville) ended the threat.

Burns got a three, three down bottom of the seventh to pick up the complete game shutout victory. She struck out four and hit one batter to improve to 14-2 on the year.

The Indians will host Coahoma Community College (0-26, 0-24 MACJC) for Sophomore Day on Wednesday before closing conference play on the road at Meridian Community College (11-22, 9-15 MACJC) on Saturday.
