ELLISVILLE, Miss. – Olivia Burns (Grenada) tossed a three-hit shutout victory to help the No. 7 Indians sweep No. 1 Jones County (33-3, 20-2 MACJC) with a 5-0 win in the final game of the day.
The Indians (28-6, 19-1 MACJC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Shelby Newsom (Cleveland) walked and scored on a groundout to second by Burns. Cori Childs (New Site) pushed the lead out to 2-0 when she walked, stole second and scored on a single by Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) in the third.
ICC added three runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) started the inning with a single and advanced when Conley reached on a fielder's choice. Newsom put the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Cox drove in both with a double. Bailie Springfield (Mantee) followed with a double to score Cox to give the Indians a 5-0 lead.
Burns scattered three hits and walked two while striking out four to improve to 12-2 on the season.
Coney went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Cox went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. The Indians totaled eight hits in the win.
The Indians will host East Mississippi (17-20, 13-9 MACJC) on Tuesday with the first game of the MACJC doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The games will be available on LetsGoICCTV.com/RED.
