No. 7 Indians knock off No. 1 Jones County, 6-3

ELLISVILLE, Miss. – The No. 7 Indians used a four run fourth inning to knock off No. 1 Jones County Junior College with a 6-3 road win in the first game of the MACJC doubleheader on Sunday.

The Indians (27-6, 18-1 MACJC) scored six runs on 10 hits, while the Bobcats (33-2, 20-1 MACJC) managed seven hits and three runs off Bailie Springfield (Mantee), who struck out two in the complete game victory.

Trailing 1-0, Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) walked, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Shelby Newsom (Cleveland) before tying the game on a single by Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) in the top half of the second.

The Indians opened up the tied contest with four runs in the fourth.

Newsom and Madison Carnes (Ecru) each singled before Cori Childs (New Site) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs in the inning. Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) roped a clutch single to push across a pair of runs and Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) followed with a two-out double to put the Indians up 5-1 before the Bobcats could final out of the inning. The Bobcats answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to make it a three-run game after four complete.

Carnes bounced a solo home run off the scoreboard to push the Indians' lead out to 6-2 in the top of the sixth.

Jones County started the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to make it 6-3 and drew a pair of walks to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs, but Springfield forced the next three batters into a routine fly to center, a pop up to second and a line out to get out of the inning with minimum damage done. The Bobcats got the tying run to the plate after a pair of singles in the bottom of the seventh, but the Indians shut down the rally to pick up the 6-3 win.

Sullivan and Newsom each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sullivan added a pair of RBI. Carnes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

The Indians snapped the Bobcats' 25-game win streak.
