Burns throws one hit shutout to complete sweep of Southwest

FULTON, Miss. – Freshman Olivia Burns (Grenada) tossed a one hit complete game  shutout to give the No. 10 Indians a 5-0 game two win and the sweep of Southwest Friday.

The Indians (26-6, 17-1 MACJC) jumped out to an early lead scoring a run in the first two frames on a RBI single by Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La) and Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) stealing home.

With the early lead, Burns was in cruise control and had a no-hitter through four innings before the leadoff hitter in the fifth hit a bloop single to left.

The lone hit didn't faze Burns or the Indians as they had extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom half of the fourth on RBI singles by Cori Childs (New Site) and Burns.

Southwest was retired in order in the final two innings to give the Indians the win and sweep and saw Burns pick up her career-high seventh strikeout.

Burns improves to 11-2 this season in her career-best outing where she faced only 26 batter.

The Indians will have some time to rest as they have a bye to start the week before traveling to Ellisville Saturday for a huge doubleheader with Jones County that will effect playoffs, conference standings and national rankings. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
