FULTON, Miss. – The No. 8 Indians woke up midway through Game 2 against Mississippi Delta Community College to pull away and complete the sweep of the Trojans with a 11-2 win in the nightcap.
The Trojans (0-16, 0-8 MACJC) took advantage of a pair of Indians (20-6, 11-1 MACJC) errors in the top of the first and held the Indians hitless in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
Hannah Williams (Philadelphia) scored on a single by Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) to make it a 2-1 contest in favor of Delta. Olivia Burns (Grenada) tied the game when Bailie Springfield (Mantee) reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second.
ICC pulled away with a five-run third inning to take a 7-2 advantage.
Burns pushed across a run when she reached on an error before Vasquez doubled off the fence in center field with bases loaded to score two more and give the Indians a 5-2 edge. A sac fly by Rachel Sternisha (Olive Branch) push the lead out to four and a double by Springfield put the Indians up 7-2 before the Trojans could get out of the inning.
The Indians put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sternisha drove in a run on a single to shallow left followed by a RBI double by Springfield. Abigail Colvin (Macon) drove in the game-ending runs on a single to right.
ICC totaled 11 hits in the win with Springfield going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI and Vasquez going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and four RBI.
The Indians will return to action against Copiah-Lincoln Community College (12-11, 5-5 MACJC) on Friday with the opening pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Fulton.
