FULTON, Miss. – Freshman Olivia Burns (Grenada) gave up just two hits and struck out two in five innings in the circle and went 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI at the plate in the No. 11 Indians 4-0 Game 2 win over No. 8 East Central Community College Friday night.
Burns went two innings before surrendering an infield single to Mackenzie Johnson and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Marlee Parkes. Burns got a routine fly ball to center field and struck out Madalyn McMahon to end the threat in the third.
Johnson reached on her second single of the game and advanced to second on a ground ball to the shortstop to put a runner in scoring position for the Warriors (14-6, 3-5 MACJC) in the fifth. Burns got some help on a leaping catch in right field by McKenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.) to end the inning.
The Indians (17-3, 8-0 MACJC) picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when Cori Childs (New Site) and Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Both sophomores advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt by Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) and scored on a single by Piper.
ICC added two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Sullivan started the inning with a hard-hit single to left and scored on the third single of the game by Piper. Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) singled and was replaced on the bases by Rachel Sternisha (Olive Branch), who scored on a bases-loaded walk issued to Burns.
The Indians had eight hits with Piper pushing across three runs on three singles.
Cox picked up her second save of the season after giving up one hit in the final two innings of the game to combine with Burns for a three-hit shutout.
The Indians doubleheader at Bevill State (Ala.) Community College has been postponed due to heavy rain forecasted for Saturday. ICC will host No. 2 Des Moines Area Community College out of Iowa on Monday, March 12 with the first game scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. opening pitch.
