No. 11 Softball wins pitchers' duel over Northwest, 2-0

SENATOBIA, Miss. – The No. 11 Indians scored two runs in the top of the seventh to earn a 2-0 win over Northwest Mississippi Community College on Wednesday.

Bailie Springfield (Mantee) got the start for the Indians (14-3, 5-0 MACJC). She threw a complete-game shutout for her eighth win of the season. The East Webster graduate scattered five hits and struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Northwest's Harley Smith retired 12-straight batters before surrendering her first hit of the game on a single by McKenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.) in fifth. Piper was erased from the bases on an inning-ending double play.

The Rangers (4-9, 0-5) got a double to start the bottom of the fifth to put a runner in scoring position for the third-straight inning but Springfield and the Indians got out of the inning with no damage done.

Hannah Williams (Philadelphia) started the sixth with a single and was replaced on the bases by Kelcie Yates (Yazoo City), who stole second and advance to third on a ground out to second. Northwest got out the jam with a ground ball to third for the final out of the inning.

Northwest got a single to start the bottom half of the sixth, but Samantha Conley (Madeville, La.) threw the runner out trying to steal second before Springfield picked up her third strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Shelby Newsom (Cleveland) reached on a one-out single in the top of the seventh and was replaced on the bases by Joanna Vasquez (Southaven), who scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Piper to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) reached on an error and came around to score on a single by Springfield to give the Indians a 2-0 lead before the Rangers could get out of the inning.

ICC picked up two quick outs on back-to-back ground balls to second baseman Madison Carnes (Ecru) before Cori Childs (New Site) made a game-ending diving catch in center field complete the three up, three down bottom of the seventh.

Olivia Burns (Grenada), Newsom, Piper, Springfield and Carnes each had a single in the win.
