Softball hangs on to beat Hinds 8-4 in Game 2

RAYMOND, Miss. - The Indians held off a mid-game rally and pulled away late to complete the sweep of Hinds with an 8-4 win in Game 2 on Saturday.

The Indians (13-3, 4-0 MACJC) got on the board first when Olivia Burns (Grenada) scored on a single by McKenzie Piper (Pell City) in the top of the second inning.

Piper went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

Cori Childs (New Site) scored on a wild pitch before Shelby Newsom (Cleveland) drove in a pair of runs on a double to give ICC a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

Childs went 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored.

The Eagles (8-10, 2-2 MACJC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the third before tying the game on a solo home run to right in the fourth.

Lilli Moore (Fulton) scored from first on a two-double by Piper to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth. Piper scored on a wild pitch to take a two-run lead before the Eagles could get out of the inning. The Eagles went quickly in the bottom half of the inning and the Indians added two more runs in the top of the seventh when Childs and Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) scored on a triple to left-center.

The Indians had 10 hits with Burns, Conley, Sullivan, Newsom and Madison Carnes (Ecru) each adding a hit in the win.

Burns improved to 6-2 on the year after giving up three runs, all earned, on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in four innings of work. Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) gave up one earned run on two hits with a strikeout in three innings of relief duty.

ICC is scheduled to travel to Senatobia on Tuesday to face Northwest (4-5, 0-2 MACJC) - weather pending.
