Softball hands Hinds 11-3 loss in 6 innings

RAYMOND, Miss. - Playing their second conference doubleheader in less than 24 hours, the Indians' bat heated up early in its 11-3 Game 1 win over Hinds in six innings on Saturday.

The Indians (12-3, 3-0 MACJC) wasted little time jumping on the Eagles (8-9, 2-1 MACJC) with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning when Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) doubled to plate Cori Childs (New Site) and Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.).

McKenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.) walked, and stole second before advancing to third on a single to right by Olivia Burns (Grenada) and scored on a nicely executed squeeze play by Madison Carnes (Ecru) to give the Indians a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.

Piper went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run scored and a pair of RBI.

ICC pushed its way out to a 7-0 lead when Shelby Newsom (Cleveland) scored on a wild pitch followed by a two-run double by Burns, who scored an error in the top of the third.

Newsom finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Eagles pushed across two run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to make it a 7-3 game.

Sullivan scored a wild pitch, Bailie Springfield (Mantee) drove in a run and Piper doubled in two more runs to give the Indians an 11-3 lead in the top of the sixth. Hinds went quietly in the bottom half of the inning allowing the Indians to pick up the run-rule victory in six innings.

The Indians pounded out 13 hits with Burns, Conley, Piper, Newsom and Springfield each recording two hits each.

Springfield improved to 7-1 on the year after giving up three runs, all earned, on four hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work. Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) entered in the sixth to close the door on the Eagles after walking one and striking out another.
