Springfield tosses no-hitter in Game 1 win over Northeast

FULTON, Miss. – Sophomore Bailie Springfield (Mantee) took care of business inside the circle and at the plate in an 8-0 five inning win over rival Northeast Mississippi Community College in the first of two conference games on Friday.

Springfield tossed a five inning no-hitter and struck out nine of 18 batters faced to improve to 6-1 behind the shutout victory and went 2-for-2 with a walk, a pair of doubles and two runs scored to help the Indians pick up the run-rule win.

ICC (10-3, 1-0 MACJC) pushed across four runs in the bottom of the second. Springfield doubled and scored on a double by Olivia Burns (Grenada) with one out in the inning. The Tigers (6-4, 0-1 MACJC) picked up the second out of the inning but hit Cori Childs (New Site) with a pitch and gave up a single to Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.). A throwing error allow Childs to score and Sullivan advance into scoring position. Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.) singled to score Sullivan and give the Indians a 4-0 lead before Northeast could get out of the inning.

Conley went 2-for-2 with a walk and 2 RBI.

The Indians tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a single by Conley.

ICC put the game on ice with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Hannah Williams (Philadelphia) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was replaced on the bases by Joanna Vasquez (Southaven). McKenzie Piper (Pell City) singled to center and an advance to second on an error that allowed Vasquez to advance to third. Springfield drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases before Burns singled to score Vasquez and Piper with Springfield advancing to third. Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) grounded to first and the throw home was not in time to keep Springfield from scoring the game-clinching run.

Burns went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, a double and a run as the Indians manufactured eight runs on nine hits in the win.
