Indians drop Game 2 to Jackson State, 8-4

FULTON, Miss. – The Indians dropped their first game of the season 8-4 in Game 2 against Jackson State (Tenn.) Community College on Saturday.

The Indians (3-1) took a 1-0 lead when Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) singled and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Hailey Reid (Batesville) in the bottom of the second inning.

The Generals (1-1) answered with 5 runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Kelsey Turnbow before taking a 7-1 lead with a run in the top of the fourth and fifth inning.

Madison Carnes (Ecru) sparked the Indians' bats by starting the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored on a single by Cori Childs (New Site). Hannah Williams (Philadelphia) plated Childs on a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 7-3 game.

Jackson State answered with a run in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-3 lead.

Down to their final three outs, the Indians tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Reid walked, stole second and scored on an one-out double by Childs. The Generals were able to squeeze the final two outs of the game on pop ups to short and second to hand ICC their first loss of the season.

Childs and Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) each had a pair of hits and combined for 4 of the Indians' 6 hits in the loss.

Olive Burns (Grenada) was the pitcher of record for the Indians. She surrendered 4 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks to go along with 1 strikeout in the game in 3.1 innings of work.

Jackson State pounded out 12 hits with 5 going for extra bases in the win.
