Softball sweeps Bevill State with 8-0 win

FULTON, Miss. - The Indians completed the season-opening sweep of Bevill State (Ala.) Community College with an 8-0 win in 5 innings in the final game of the evening on Wednesday.

Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) continued to swing a hot bat against the Bears (0-2) going 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored in the run-rule victory. The sophomore designated player went 3-for-4 with 3 runs, 2 doubles, a RBI and a stolen base on the day.

The Indians (2-0) jumped on the Bears (0-2) early by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hannah Williams (Philadelphia) singled and stole second to start the game with Sullivan following with a single and a stolen base of her own before both players scored on a hard hit one-out single to right by McKenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.) gave the Indians a 2-0 lead.

Piper would come around to score on a throwing error after Bailie Springfield (Mantee) laced a single up-the-middle. Joanna Vasquez (Southaven) would push across Springfield on a ground ball to second to give the Indians a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Cori Childs (New Site) singled and stole second before scoring on a pass ball. Williams, who reached on a fielder's choice, would still her second base of the game and advance on a pass ball before scoring on a single by Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La.). Piper would be robbed of a base hit on a nice play at second that allowed Conley to score the third run of the inning.

Haley Reid (Batesville) would draw a 5-pitch walk and score the eventual mercy-rule invoking run on a double by Conley in the bottom of the fourth.

Conley went 2-for-3 with a run and a double to drive in a pair of runs. Piper totaled 3 RBIs in Game 2.

Springfield threw 4 scoreless innings while giving up 3 hits and striking out 6 and only walking 1 batter in the win. Makenzie Toombs (Ackerman) gave up 2 hits in a scoreless fifth inning.

The win was Coach Andy Kirk's 400th career win and his 212th win at ICC.

The Indians will be back in action Saturday as they host Jackson State (Tenn.) Community College at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. The games will be available on LetsGoICCTV.com/BLUE.
