Softball opens season with 5-0 win over Bevill State

FULTON, Miss. - The Indians opened the 2018 season with an impressive 5-0 Game 1 win over Bevill State (Ala.) Community College on Wednesday.

Meg Sullivan (Springville, Ala.) and Bailie Springfield (Mantee) each had a double while McKenzie Piper (Pell City, Ala.), Shelby Newsom (Cleveland), and Haley Reid (Batesville) each added a single to round out the Indians' five hits in the win.

Springfield got things going for the Indians when she ripped a double down the third baseline in the first at-bat of the game. The Delta State transfer scored on a one-double by Sullivan, who would later score on a two-out error to give the Indians a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Indians would hang a three spot on the board in the bottom of the third when Sullivan scored on a single by Newsom. Piper and Newsom both scored on another two-out error by the Bears to take a 5-0 lead.

Olivia Burns (Grenada) surrendered 2 hits and scattered 5 walks while striking out 6 batters to pick up the win after tossing 5 scoreless innings in her collegiate debut. Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) struck out a pair of batters in 2 innings of work to combine with Burns for the shutout.
