More two-out struggles doom Indians in 3-2 loss to Gulf Coast

ELLISVILLE, MS – Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College had the Indians number in the MACJC State Softball Tournament. For the second time in the tournament, the Bulldogs' came up clutch in two-out situations to eliminate the Indians with a 3-2 win Saturday night.

Aidan Nichols snuck a single up the middle to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Lexie Mathis hammered a ground ball through the left side of the infield to push across the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eight.

All 10 of the No. 7 Bulldogs' runs in the two games against the No. 6 Indians came with two outs in the inning.

The Indians (39-12-1) took an early 1-0 lead after Alex Brown (Pontotoc) was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Mamie Hollenhead (Mathiston) in the top of the first. Gulf Coast (39-11) rallied to tie the game, 1-1, after Nichols scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second.

ICC would reclaim the lead, 2-1, when Brown scored on the second single of the game by Hollenhead in the top of the fifth.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE INDIANS' LOSS TO GULF COAST 

The Indians will face the winner of the MACJC State Tournament in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. Gulf Coast would have to beat tournament host No. 1 Jones County (46-2) twice in order to claim the MACJC championship. The winner of the tournament will host next week's region tournament.
