No. 9 Indians fall to No. 1 Jones County, 9-2, in sloppy Game 1

Fulton, MS – The No. 9 Indians spotted No. 1 Jones County Junior College four unearned runs in their 9-2 Game 1 loss to the Bobcats on Friday.

Jones County took a 1-0 lead when Kelsha Loftin singled and advanced to third on a double by Kelly Bryd before scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning. Mamie Hollenhead (Mathiston) reached on a two-out single, but was left stranded in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bobcats took advantage of a pair of walks to start the inning to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second before tacking on three runs to take a commanding 6-0 advantage in the third on a passed ball, single by Brittany Baty and an error.

The Indians got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hollenhead singled and scored on a double off the fence by Kaitlyn Rhodes (Springville, AL). Jones County added another three spot on the board in the fifth on a wild pitch, two-out error, and a single by Byrd.

Hollenhead doubled and beat the throw home to score on a sacrifice fly to left by Rhodes.

The Indians got the Bobcats to go three up, three down in the top of the seventh, but returned the favor with a three up, three down in the bottom half of the inning to drop the opening game of the day.

Hollenhead went three for three with a double and two runs scored. Alex Brown (Pontotoc) and Mary Kansas Sullivan (Houston) each had a single to go along with Rhodes double to bring the Indians' hit total to six in the loss.

Carleigh Mills (Corinth) was the pitcher of record after giving up five runs on nine hits and five walks while striking out one to fall to 15-6 on the season.
