FULTON, MS - The No. 14 Indians used some late-game heroics to defeat Southwest Mississippi Community College (16-19, 12-8 MACJC) with a 5-4 win in eight innings in Game 1 of Saturday's conference doubleheader.
Trailing 4-3, Mary Kansas Sullivan (Houston) delivered a single up the middle to score Cori Childs (New Site) and tie the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh before the Bears snuffed out the rally with an inning-ending double play.
After a three up, three down inning in the top half of the eight by Southwest, Meg Sullivan (Springville, AL) started the Indians' half of the inning with single and stole second base to move into scoring position. The Bears quickly collected two outs before Rhodes hit a grounder that was booted by the shortstop, allowing Meg Sullivan to score the game-winning run in walk-off fashion.
Meg Sullivan and Caroline Dickins (Batesville) each went two for three.
Dickins surrendered four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six to move to 8-3 on the season.
