FULTON, MS – The No. 8 Indians' rally against No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College came up short as the Bulldogs held on for a 7-5 victory in the nightcap on Friday.
Trailing 3-0, the Indians answered with a three run bottom of the third on a RBI single by Mamie Hollenhead (Mathiston) to score Alex Brown (Pontotoc) and a two-run single by McKenzie Piper (Pell City) to push across Hollenhead and Hannah Williams (Philadelphia).
Williams finished the game three for three with a walk and a run scored.
The Bulldogs answered a three spot of their own in the top of the sixth, but the Indians countered with a pair of runs and left bases loaded after Gulf Coast cut down the tying run at home on a bases loaded fielder's choice to second base in the bottom half of the inning.
Up 6-5, Gulf Coast tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh and closed the door on the Indians rally with a three up, three down bottom half of the inning to hang on for the two-run win.
Kaitlyn Rhodes (Alexnadria, AL) had a double while Piper added a pair of RBI in the loss.
