FULTON, MS – The No. 11 Itawamba Community College Lady Indians' softball team earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) academic honors when the league announced their awards.
"I can't be more excited for the girls." Said MACJC North Division Coach of the Year Andy Kirk. "It's great to see all the hard work and dedication the girls put into the season both on and off the field pay off with the type of recognition on the national level."
Hernando's Catherine Carver (3.85) and Guntown's Rachel Elder (3.80) earned the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement Award and was named to the MACJC Distinguished Academic All-State list while All-American and Delta State signee Kory Watterson of Nesbit (3.76) earned the NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement Award and was named MACJC Academic All-State.
As a team, the Lady Indians finished amongst the nation's best with their accumulative 3.40 GPA.
"We stress academics here at ICC because we know that success in the classroom will result in not only success on the field but also in life long after their softball careers are done," said Kirk.
ICC won its third-straight MACJC North Division championship after finishing the 2014 season 37-13 and 21-4 in North Division play.
