FULTON, MS – Itawamba Community College held a press conference in the Davis Event Center to announce Michael Metz as the men's and women's head tennis coach on Wednesday.
Metz played tennis at Mississippi State University from 1994-98. During that time, he was the only player that was a member of two NCAA semifinal squads (94, 98) and was member of a top ten team each season with the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs finished as NCAA Team Championship semifinalist in 1994 and 1998. Metz was undefeated in doubles play at the 1998 NCAA Tournament. MSU won the 1996 SEC Team Tournament Championship and were NCAA Team Championship quarterfinalist in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
After his career at Mississippi State, Metz played professionally in the United States Tennis Association before accepting a position as the women's assistant coach at his alma mater (2000-02). The Florida native was named head coach at Birmingham Southern (2002-03) and returned to Starkville as the men's assistant coach (2003-06).
In 2005, Metz was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.
After leaving Mississippi State, he has served as an International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA) Tennis Performance Trainer (TPT) and Certified Tennis Performance Specialist (CTPS). Metz is also a Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) member and a PTR Master of Performance. He has served as Director of Tennis at the Magnolia Tennis Club in Columbus and Shiloh Ridge in Corinth.
He takes over for Hall of Famer Paul Johnson, who retired this past season after 42 years in Fulton. He helped establish the ICC tennis program in 1974 and since then has won 15 MACJC and 10 NJCAA Region titles in tennis.
Metz earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Mississippi State. He and his wife Tammi have three children: Parker, Warren and Livi Catherine.
