Indians finish seventh in MACJC and Region 23 Tennis Tourney

PERKINSTON, MS - The men's tennis team finished seventh in the 2016 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tennis Tournament on Saturday.

Mark Robbins (New Albany) defeated Dalton Young of Northwest Mississippi Community College 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the No. 1 singles bracket before being eliminated by second seeded Mateusz Kimelski of Copiah-Lincoln Community College 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Brian McDonnieal (Corinth) earned the No. 4 seed of the No. 2 singles bracket and defeated Chris Capps of Hinds Community College 6-4, 6-4 before being knocked out of title contention 6-1, 6-0 by eventual bracket champion Diego Leal of Jones County Junior College in the semifinal round.

Jacob Bozeman (Brookhaven) battled through a hard-fought opening round match against Cole Duty of East Central Community College 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 before being eliminated in the quarterfinal round 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 by No. 1 seeded Braxton Hinton of Co-Lin, who eventually withdrew from the tournament due to an injury in the semifinals.

Dexter Clay (Shannon) dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to No. 3 seeded Brett Bowen of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the quarterfinals of the No. 4 singles bracket.

Lane Brandon (Houston) defeated Cade Scroggins of Northeast Mississippi Community College 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) in the opening round of the No. 5 singles bracket before being eliminated by No. 1 seed and eventual bracket winner Will Irvin of Meridian Community College 6-1, 6-1.

Cameron Shumpert (Fulton) dropped an 6-0, 6-3 decision to Graham Murphree of East Central in the opening round of the No. 6 singles bracket.

Robbins and McDonnieal dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 3 seeded Bryan Allen and Sam Blackburn of Gulf Coast in the quarterfinals of the No. 1 doubles bracket.

Clay and Bozeman were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the No. 2 doubles bracket after a 6-1, 6-3 loss to No. 3 seed and eventual bracket runner-up Chase Pennington and Taylor Tamberg of Jones County.

Brandon and Shumpert fell 6-4, 6-1 to No. 4 seeded Noah Jones and John Taylor of Meridian in the quarterfinal round of the No. 3 doubles bracket.

The Indians finished seventh after totaling seven points in the tournament. Meridian earned the 2016 state and region title with 29 points while host Gulf Coast finished second with 23 points.
