RAYMOND, MS – The Itawamba Community College men's tennis team came up just short Friday, falling 6-3 to Hinds Community College.
The Indians (2-2) started the day taking two of three from the Eagles in doubles action as Mark Robbins (New Albany) and Bryan McDonnieal (Corinth) defeated Daniel Yepez and Matthew Burks 8-5, and the duo of Jacob Bozeman (Brookhaven) and Dexter Clay (Shannon) picked up an 8-4 win over Daniel Luck and Landon Young.
Leading 2-1, the Indians just needed to split in singles action to pick up the road win and McDonnieal got things started on the right track as he defeated Luck 6-3, 6-0.
The Eagles answered with two wins as Yepez defeated Robbins 6-2, 6-2 and Cameron Shumpert (Fulton) fell 6-2, 6-2 to Villareal.
The final three matches needed tie breakers to determine the winner, and the Indians would come up just short in all of them.
Bozeman split sets with Burks 6-4, 2-6 but fell 10-8 in tie breaker, followed by Clay falling 6-1, 3-6 (10-7). Ryan Wheeless clinched the victory for the Eagles as he outlasted Lane Brandon (Houston) 6-3, 3-6 (11-9).
The Indians will travel to Wesson Saturday to take on the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves at 2:00 pm.
