PERKINSTON, MS – The No. 19 Itawamba Community College men's tennis program rode their nine match win streak into Saturday's battle with the No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs, but they would see the streak end as the Bulldogs picked up a 7-2 victory.
It was hard fought matches and the Indians (9-3) were right there until the end of most of them.
In doubles, the Indians were swept by the Bulldogs but all three showdowns were close with final scores of 8-6, 8-4 and 8-5.
Mark Robbins (New Albany) made quick work of his singles opponent winning 6-2, 6-1 and David McElwain (West Point) outlasted Travous Wilson to pick up the victory, 7-5, 6-4.
Three of the other four singles matches went to tie breakers but the Indians came up just short in all of them. Nathaniel Pinkney (Southaven) won the second set 6-1 to force the tiebraker against Skyler Flowers, who is ranked 30th in the nation. Flowers, who took the first set 6-1, took the tie breaker to hand the Indians the loss.
The Indians will compete for the MACJC and NJCAA Region 23 Titles beginning April 16 at Rob Leake City Park in Tupelo.
