FULTON, MS – Records are made to be broken and that's exactly what Anthony Fernandez and the ICC Indians did Tuesday night to remain the state's only unbeaten men's soccer team with an 11-0 win over Southwest Mississippi.
Fernandez (New Albany) scored 6 goals and accumulated 12 points to break the record for most goals and most points in match, previously set by Dylan McCord (Tupelo) against Northwest during the 2007 season.
"I felt pretty good coming into the match," said Fernandez. "I was just a little pumped and got focused and it felt pretty good scoring six goals. It feels great [knowing my name is in the ICC record books] and I just want to give God the glory."
"I don't know what to say about Anthony's play other than that guy was incredible," said Coach Mike Sullivan. "He broke the record for goals in a game and points in a game after only basically playing half of the game."
"He was on fire and we wanted to get him on track because we've been playing some really tough teams that have been marking him up really tough so he's had to fight for a lot this season. He did a great job today and hopefully he is going to continue that as we go foward."
Justin Gordon (Starkville) added a pair of goals for the Indians while Karter Porter (Olive Branch), Brayden Timmons (Pontotoc), and Blake Lashlee (Olive Branch) added a goal each in the victory.
Dylan Howard (Starkville), Michael Wathen (Amory), and Evan Thomas (Amory) each had two assists with Timmons, Alx Little (Tupelo) and Drew Williams (Tupelo) each dishing out an assist to help the Indians improve to 5-0 on the season.
The Indians' (4-0, 0-0 MACJC North) 11-goal effort also set a new mark for goals in match, previously set at 9 goals against East Central in 2008 and East Mississippi in 2007 while tying the record for most assists in a match with 9, previously set in 2008 against East Central.
"I thought everyone was really dialed in today," commented Sullivan. "We had a lot of unselfish play to allowed us to be able to set all these new records. It seemed like the more we moved the ball and worked as a team the easier the game got for everyone, but we've got to be able to build on this to get ready for opening division play on Friday."
ICC will open MACJC North Division play against Northwest Mississippi Community College on Friday with the Lady Indians kicking things off at 2:00 p.m. and the Indians scheduled to follow at 4:00 p.m.
