Trio of ICC Golfers qualify for National Tournament

FULTON, Miss. – A trio of Itawamba Community College golfers qualified to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Golf Championship after their performance in the District D Championship this weekend.

Brandon Barrett (Tupelo), Dean Garrett (New Albany) and Garrett Moore (Southaven) punched their tickets to nationals Sunday in Amory and helped the Indians finish third in the district.

"I'm proud of the three guys we have going to nationals," said ICC Golf Coach Michael Nanney. " They are going to represent us well, and we look forward to going to nationals."

Garrett led the Indians during the District D Championship and finished third overall with a two-day total of 145 (+1). He started the weekend shooting a 70 (-2), and on the final day he shot a 75 (+3).

"It means the world to me," Garret said. "I've worked so hard to get here and I can't wait to get up there and compete."

Barrett shot 78 (+6) on day one, but improved by three strokes on day two with a 75 (+3) to finish 16th in the district tournament with a 153 total.

"The national tournament means everything to me," Barrett said. "Our district is so tough, and you have to shoot your best to get to the national tournament. I did my best to play that way all year and it paid off."

Moore tied for 20th overall with a total score of 157 shooting a 76 (+4) on the first day and an 81 (+9) on day two.

"This is something I've worked for all year, so it feels good," said Moore. "The national tournament is something I've always wanted to do, so I'm excited to go out and experience it."

The NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship will be May 21-24 at the Swan Lake Golf Resort in Plymouth, Ind.
