Indians upset division leading Holmes, 75-70

FULTON, MS - A 10-0 second half run, lifted Itawamba Community College past MACJC North Division leading Holmes Community College Thursday night, 75-70.

The Indians (12-8, 5-4 MACJC North) exchanged baskets with the Bulldogs early in the contest and both teams saw themselves ahead by eight points during the opening half. However, the visiting Indians found themselves trailing 33-28 at halftime.

Five minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs (15-5, 6-3 MACJC North) held a four point advantage, 39-35, but the Indians caught fire, going on a 10-0 run over the next minute and a half to take a 45-39 lead.

The Indians would extend their lead to as much has 15 points, but a surging Bulldog squad cut that lead down to six, 73-67, in the closing minutes. The Indian defense stepped up and held off the Bulldogs in the final minute to pick up the 75-70 win and complete the season sweep.

Martaveous McKnight (Walls) paced the Indians with 18 points, followed by Quenten Taylor (Edison, GA) with 15. Cody North (Tremont) pitched in 11 points and Carter Sweat (Piperton, TN) added 10.

Daryl Macon led the Bulldogs with a game-high 22 points.

The win puts the Indians only one game back of a three way tie for first place in the North Division. One of the teams ahead of the Indians is rival Northeast Mississippi Community College, which they will play Monday in Booneville. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
