CLARKSDALE, Miss. – ICC overcame a sluggish first half to pull away from the Coahoma Community College Tigers for a 30-14 victory on Thursday.
The Tigers (1-6, 0-4 MACJC North) scored on their opening drive of the contest to take a 7-0 lead before the Indians (4-3, 3-1 MACJC North) answered with a 7-yard pass to Malik Honeycutt (Tallahassee, FL) from Dan Ellington (Olive Branch) and 21-yard field goal by Caleb Comer (Caledonia) to take a 10-7 lead going into the break.
Comer connected on a 35-yard field goal to give the Indians a 13-7 lead at the 9:50 mark of the third quarter. Ellington found a wide open Jamel Thomas (Caledonia) for a 32-yard pass to make it a 20-7 contest heading into the fourth quarter.
Ellington connected with Honeycutt on a 25-yard pass early in the final frame to take a 27-7 lead and Comer added a 26-yard field goal on the ensuing drive to pull away for a 30-7 advantage. Coahoma added a late rushing touchdown when the game was no longer in doubt to make it a 30-14 final score.
The Indians totaled 414 yards of offense (318 passing; 96 rushing) on the night.
Ellington completed 19 of 37 passing for 318 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Terry Williams (Southaven) caught 6 passes for 89 yards. Honeycutt added 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 4 catches. Kadarius Forside (West Point) rushed for 52 yards on 9 carries.
Defensively, the Indians allowed 325 yards of total offense (192 passing; 133 rushing) with a chunk of yardage coming late in the game.
Devan Hollins (Southaven) and Daylon Fox (Southaven) had 9 tackles each. Hollins forced a fumble with Fox recording an assist on a tackle for a loss of one yard and a fumble recovery. Keshon Heard (Hamilton) added 6 tackles, 2 pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Travis Sailo (Tuscaloosa, AL) had 2 tackles and a blocked kick.
The Indians' win mixed with Northwest Mississippi Community College (5-1, 4-1 MACJC North) defeating East Mississippi Community College (6-1, 4-1), 61-38, has put the Indians in a three-way tie with the Rangers and Lions with two games remaining in North Division play.
