Indians and Trojans split doubleheader

Fulton, Miss. – Itawamba Community College baseball picked up a split with Mississippi Delta Community College Tuesday, winning a long and wild game one, 20-16, and falling 5-1 in the nightcap.

Game 1: Indians 20, Trojans 16

The Indians (28-10, 15-7 MACCC) and Trojans battled in a wild game that featured four five plus run innings, two grand slams and 36 combined runs as ICC picked up the 20-16 win.

In the first, the Indians took a 1-0 lead on a double by Jackson Lee (Calhoun City) and after the Trojans tied the game in the top of the third, Jaxin Settlemires (Kossuth), who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, hit a three-run home run in the bottom half to give the Indians a 3-1 lead.

The Trojans scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead, but a solo home run by Dre McCray (Water Valley)  and a run scoring on an error tie the contest at 6-6.

In the fifth and sixth, the Torjans scored two runs in each frame, but the Indians had a big bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs with two outs highlighted by two-run doubles from Gray Bane (Olive Branch) and Eli Hancock (Houston).

The Indians followed up their six-run sixth with a five-run seventh that was capped off by Bo Rock (Amory) hitting a grand slam to extend the lead to 17-10.

In the top of the eighth, the Trojans answered with a grand slam of their own as they put together their second five-run inning of the game.

The Indians took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score three runs in the eighth and held the Trojans to one run in the ninth to pick up the 20-16 victory.

Game 2: Trojans 5, Indians 1

Game two didn't feature the high powered offense that was on display in game one, as the Indians were held to only four hits and one run.

The Indians lone run came in the first inning as Drew Capobianco (Saltillo) scored on a passed ball that tied the game at 1-1.

In the second, the Trojans regained the lead, scoring one run on two hits and picked up two insurance runs in the third.

Delta's Tate Anderson held the Indians scoreless for the final six innings while ICC's Ben Davis (Booneville) settled in and struck out nine and kept the Trojans scoreless for three frames in the 5-1 loss.

The Indians will host Hinds Community College Saturday for the final home doubleheader of the regular season. First pitch on Sophomore Day is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will close out "Chop Day" that begins at 11 a.m.
