Indians sweep Southwest

Fulton, Miss. – Itawamba Community College baseball picked up its third conference sweep Saturday by defeated Southwest Mississippi Community College 19-3 in game one and 4-2 in game two.

Game 1: Indians 19, Bears 3 (7-innings)

The Indians (21-8, 9-5 MACCC) didn't waste any time getting on the board, scoring four runs in the opening frame highlighted by a two-run home run by Will Verdung (Corinth) and a run-scoring single by Bo Rock (Amory).

In the second inning, Verdung, who finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBI, followed up his first inning home run with another two-run blast [video] to stretch the Indians lead out to 6-0.

Southwest cut the lead to 6-3 scoring three runs over the third and fourth innings, but the Indians scored 13 unanswered runs over three innings, including nine in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the 19-3 run-rule victory.

Matthew Martinolich had a big game going 4-for-5 with two RBI and Eli Hancock (Houston) drove in three runs while going 2-for-3. Jaxin Settlemires (Kossuth) also had multiple RBI as he went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.

Game 2: Indians 4, Bears 2

Runs didn't come as easy for the Indians in game two, but they were able to rally late in the game to pick up the 4-2 come from behind win.

The Bears plated a run in the opening two innings and the Indians trailed 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when they were able to take advantage of an error in right field with two outs that allowed a pair of runs to score and tie the game.

Verdung then singled to score Martinolich [video] and give the Indians their first lead of the contest, 3-2.

Hancock drove in an insurance run in the sixth [video] and Ben Davis (Booneville) and Verdung combined to shut down the Bears in the seventh to secure the win and the sweep.

The Indians will step out of the conference Tuesday when they host Calhoun Community College for a nine inning game beginning at 2 p.m. in Fulton.
