Indians get run-rule and walk-off wins to sweep Coahoma

Fulton, Miss. – Itawamba Community College baseball picked up a conference sweep of Coahoma Community College Tuesday with an 11-1 run-rule victory in game one and a 4-3 walk-off win in game two.  

Game 1: Indians 11, Tigers 1 (7-innings)

The Indians (17-6, 5-3 MACCC) scored 11 unanswered runs to pick up the game one run-rule win with Jackson Lee (Calhoun City), Will Verdung (Corinth) and Bo Rock (Amory) leading the way with multiple RBI.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second, Lee, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, singled to tie the game in the bottom of the third and Eli Hancock (Houston) gave the Indians the lead when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Lee struck again in the bottom of the fourth with another RBI single, followed by Rock with his two-run scoring double [video].

Leading 5-1, the Indians quickly doubled their lead scoring five runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run double by Jaxin Settlemires (Kossuth).

In the sixth, Verdung singled to left to put the Indians up by 10, 11-1, to put the run-rule into effect.

The Tigers were unable to score a run to extend the contest, giving the Indians to game one victory.

Coleman Haltom (Olive Branch) picked up the win to improve to 3-1 this season by throwing six and a third innings and allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven [video].

Game 2: Indians 4, Tigers 3 (9-innings)

A ninth inning double by Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) capped off the day as the Indians took game two 4-3 in walk-off fashion [video].

The Indians took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of sacrifice flies in the first inning, but the Tigers tied the game in the fourth scoring one run on a hit and the tying run crossing the plate on a passed ball.

Hancock put the Indians back in front on another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, but the Tigers answered with a solo home run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

The game stayed knotted at three after the seventh, forcing extra innings. Both teams left a runners on base and in scoring position in the eighth and the Tigers stranded the go-ahead run at second in the top of the ninth.

A hit by pitch put Ty Roberson (Ecru) on as the possible winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and with two outs, Martinolich doubled to left allowing Roberson to score and give the Indians the win and the sweep.

Saturday the Indians host No. 2 Pearl River Community College, who swept No. 5 Meridian Tuesday in come from behind fashion, for a big conference doubleheader. First pitch from Roy Cresap Field is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be available on LetsGoICCTV.com/red.

EDIT 3.22.23 (9:30 p.m.): ICC has added a game at Blue Mountain Christian University Thursday with first pitch of the one nine inning game scheduled for 2 p.m.
