Indians sweep Holmes

Goodman, Miss. - Itawamba Community College baseball picked up its first conference doubleheader sweep Wednesday as they defeated Holmes Community College 17-3 in game one, and 8-4 in game two.

Game 1: Indians 17, Bulldogs 3 (7-innings)

The Indians (15-4, 3-1 MACCC) came out swinging and had 19 hits in game on run-rule victory.

Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) and Will Verdung (Corinth) led the offensive charge getting three hits each and Verdung picking up a team-high four RBI.

Despite the abundance of hits, the Indians plated their first two runs on a bases loaded  walk and a sacrifice fly int he top of the second, but rattled off four runs in the third on RBI singles from Jackson Lee (Calhoun City), Bo Rock (Amory) and Eli Hancock (Houston).

A sacrifice day scored the Indians lone run in the fourth, but they were able to put up another four-run frame in the fifth highlighted by a two-run home run from Jaxin Settlemires (Kossuth). 

The four-run fifth, put ICC up 11-1, but they added four more runs in the sixth. Gray Bane (Olive Branch) and Verdung hit back-to-back two-run scoring doubles to stretch the lead to 15-1. 

A double by Drew Capobianco (Saltillo) in the seventh, drove in two runs to get the Indians to 17 runs and despite giving up a pair in the bottom of the frame, the Indians pick up the 17-3 run-rule victory. 

Ben Davis (Booneville) picked up the win throwing 6 innings and allowing only two hits and improved to 3-0 this season. 

Game 2: Indians 8, Bulldogs 4

The Indians' offense picked up where they left off getting 16 hits on their way to the 8-4 win.

Martinolich got things started with a solo home run in the top of the first and Lee drove in a run with a triple to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Capobianco, who went 3-for-5, blasted a three-run home run and Bane doubled in a run for complete the four-run frame and extend the lead to 6-0.

Bane picked up his second RBI of the game in the fourth to put the Indians up 7-0, but a two-run home run in the fifth, cut the lead down to 7-2.

After Holmes plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, Hancock singled in a run to put the Indians up 8-3 in the sixth. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Holmes would score the game's final run as the Indians were able to hold on to pick up the win and the sweep.

Coleman Haltom (Olive Branch) picked up his second win of the season after throwing five and two thirds innings. 

The Indians will travel to Perkinston Saturday for a conference doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College with game one scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
