Indians overcome early deficit to defeat Gulf Coast

Raymond, Miss. – Itawamba Community College baseball travel to Hinds to face a pair of conference opponents in non-conference games, and if their first game, the Indians overcame an early three run deficit to pick up a 10-6 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

The Indians (5-1) trailed 3-0 at the end of the opening frame but were able to tie the contest in the top of the third. Will Verdung (Corinth) drove in the first run with a single and added another run on a ground out. Jaxin Settlemires (Kossuth) wrapped up the inning with a doubled that tied the game.

Gulf Coast would regain the lead scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth, but a big six run innings in the sixth put the Indians in the lead for good.

Bo Rock (Amory) started the scoring in the big inning with a run-scoring double and Drew Capobianco (Saltillo), who was 3-for-5, tied the game with a RBI single.

The Indians would take the lead on a passed ball that allowed Eli Hancock (Houston) to score and Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) extended the lead to 7-5 with a single that scored Capobianco.

Verdung, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI, capped off the inning with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 9-6.

Gulf Coast plated one run in the bottom of the sixth but the Indians scored the game's final run on a RBI double by Martinolich, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI, in the seventh.

Coleman Haltom (Olive Branch) picked up his first win of the season and threw three and a third innings and allowed two runs on three hit and struck out four.

The Indians will have a quick turnaround facing the host Hinds Community College Eagles in the final game of the non-conference tripleheader in Raymond.
