Indians open season with extra inning road win

Decatur, Ala. – Itawamba Community College baseball opened the 2023 season with a 13-10 extra inning victory over Calhoun Community College Friday.

The Indians (1-0) and Warhawks exchanged runs in the first two frames, but a six run third, put the Indians down 7-2.

With a lot of innings left, the Indians chipped at the lead and were able to tie the game at 8-8 in the sixth as Ty Roberson (Ecru) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the first inning of extras, Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) and Will Verdung (Corinth) hit back-to-back singles to give the Indians a 10-8 lead. However, the lead would be short lived as the Warhawks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to keep the game going.

Gray Bane (Lewisburg) started the ninth with a bang, hitting a solo home run down the left field line to put the Indians up by one, 11-10.

The duo of Matinolich and Verdung added insurance runs with back-to-back RBI singles again to stretch the lead out to 13-10.

Bo Rock (Amory), who entered to pitch in the eighth, set down the Warhawks in order in the bottom of the frame to close out the game and pick up his first collegiate win. Rock also had two hits and two RBI in the game.

Jackson Lee (Calhoun City) set up numerous scoring opportunities as he went 4-for-4, scoring four runs and drawing two walks.

Martinlocih and Roberson picked up three RBI each and Drew Capobianco (Saltillo) had two RBI and drew three walks.

Game two of the doubleheader was called due to darkness in the bottom of the third. ICC led 4-0 at the time but will not be counted as the game did not reach the minimum number of innings.

ICC will host Snead State Community College Tuesday for its home opener with game one scheduled for 1 p.m. weather permitting.
