Indians sweep Calhoun

Decatur, Ala. – In their first road doubleheader of the season, the Indians got back to their winning ways, sweeping Calhoun Community College with a 6-4 game one win and a 13-1 run-rule victory in game two.

Game 1: Indians 6, Warhawks 4

The Indians overcame four errors and four unearned runs to win the first game of the day behind a good pitching performances from Brady Davis (Hamilton), who went six innings and struck out five, and Caleb Goddard (Tupelo), who faced only three batters to pick up the save.

Early in the game, the Indians took a 3-1 lead as Will Verdung (Corinth) scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and Blaine Ware (Batesville) drove in two runs in the second with a single.

The Warhawks would take advantage of a bases loaded error that allowed three runs to score in the bottom of the third.

In the fifth, the Indians regained the lead as Verdung scored on a ground out and Ware scored on a wild pitch.

Eli Hancock (Houston) added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, setting up Goddard to close the door in the bottom of the inning and secure the win.

Game 2: Indians 13, Warhawks 1 (6-innings)

The Indians rattled off 13 runs on 12 hits in game two to pick up a 13-1 run-rule victory and the sweep.

Taylor Tarver (Oxford) started the scoring for the Indians with a two-run single in the top of the second. Terris Meeks (Olive Branch) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Ware followed with a two-run double to make it 5-0.

Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) capped off the seven-run second inning with a single that scored two runs.

The Warhawks would get a run back in the third, but Tarver extended the lead back to seven when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Warhawks loaded the bases, but Reed Hale (Amory) came in and forced the third out to end the threat.

The Indians would enforce the run-rule with a five run top of the sixth as Hayes Holman (Cleveland), Verdung and Ware all drove in runs.

Hale closed the door in the bottom half to secure the win and the sweep.

Roe Ketchum (West Point) picked up his first win of the season on the hill as the Indians improved to 5-5.

The Indians will host Rend Lake College Saturday with first pitch from Roy Cresap Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
