No. 17 Indians swept by Lake Land

Fulton, Miss. – Itawamba Community College hosted Lake Land College out of Illinois Saturday for a doubleheader as part of the Lakers swing through Mississippi.

The Indians (3-5) came in to the day hoping to shake off the midweek game where they were swept by Snead State, but the Lakers came into Fulton and left with a sweep after winning game one 8-3 and game two 5-4.

Game 1: Lakers 8, Indians 3

The Indians trailed early in the game as the Lakers scored three runs in the top of the first, and they held a 3-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) hit a RBI single.

In the top of the fifth, the Lakers added three runs to their lead and two more in the sixth to take an 8-1 advantage.

Jonathan Whittington (Columbus) hit a two-run single in the seventh, but the deficit was too big as they Indians fell, 8-3.

Game 2: Lakers 5, Indians 4

The second game was a scoreless affair through the first three innings highlighted by six strikeouts by Will Armistead (Mooreville), who finished with nine strikeouts, and Easton Hood (Tupelo) throwing out a runner at the plate on a sacrifice fly attempt in the top of the third.

Hood would then break the scoreless streak with a RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. However, the lead wouldn't hold as the Lakers answered with three runs in the top of the fifth.

After scoring two runs in the sixth, the Lakers led 5-1, but the Indians were not done fighting as Riley Davis (Collierville, Tenn.) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one, 5-4.

The Lakers were able to hold off the Indians comeback attempt to pick up the win and the sweep.

The Indians will look to shake off the first back-to-back sweep since 2017 when they travel to Snead State Tuesday, weather permitting.
